“Common Man” - Digital Sculpture
I reimagine the “Common Man” with deliberate material tension, weathered surface, exaggerated physiognomy, and arrested gaze,so that quiet endurance becomes tactile and almost geological. The sculptural language leans into asymmetry and micro-imperfections, reflecting a psyche attuned to observation over declaration, where satire is embedded in form rather than overt gesture. Inspired by Created by legendary cartoonist R. K. Laxman in 1951, The Common Man is an iconic cartoon character who featured daily in the You Said It pocket cartoon on the front page of The Times of India for over 50 years. Representing the “silent majority” of India, he is a voiceless witness to the nation’s political and social changes, embodying the resilience and quiet frustration of the average citizen.I attempt to embody a lifetime of silent witnessing, fatigue, resilience, and restrained dissent coexisting in a single still frame. My process reveals an instinct to humanise caricature without diluting its critique, treating each plane and wrinkle as a narrative device that echoes collective memory and subdued unrest.
