Comic Book Character Sculpts

OMG… WOW WOW WOW! I’m sure DC is quite pleased with this tribute… how could they not be! WOW :grimacing:

Holy smokes! These are awesome, Joe! Great work, as usual!

Awesome group you have there Joe!! Really impressive work:+1:

awsome!

 I appreciate the comments, everybody… thanks for looking!

Really like the sculptures, Joe!
What kind of reference did you have on the Michael Keaton Batman? It looks really accurate.
I had heard years ago the the actual cowl was somewhat unfinished in the back. Did you see that?
best
Jim

Thanks, Jim!
I appreciate you checking this out and the nice words

DC provided me with a ton of pics but largely nothing that one couldn’t get online. I kept at it until DC was happy with it and then he sent it off to MK for approval.

The cowl pics I saw did look weird in the back…there’s definitely some kind of seam but I may have been looking at a homegrown custom job.

Awesome the way the new Batman Arkham asylum game Bats references this classic version. I always loved the first two films and especially the Anton Furst production designs for the first film. Incredible design. So sad he took his own life (I think?) a while back. A visionary talent.

I tried to give the base a little of the feel of his Gotham for the bust variant.
Always trying to look for ways to do little homages to those responsible for the iconic looks of some of the characters I’ve been lucky enough to work on.

Doing a gig now of one of my all time of all time favorite characters and hope to post it here when I can.

A little bit bigger shot of the second group…

Hi All,

It’s been a while since I’ve updated…these are kind of all over the map:

Captain Marvel for Bowen Designs, Captain Marvel mini figure for DC Direct, World of Warcraft Coins for DC Direct, and shots of prototypes I digitally sculpted that were on display at Toy Fair. Actual shots of final digital versions will be posted when I am allowed, in the meantime, these were all I could find online.

Thanks for looking!!!

Rick Grimes for McFarlane Toys

The Real Ghostbusters Statue of Liberty light up statue for Diamond Select Toys

Again, the last three are just shots I got online…I’ll post the “real” shots when I have permission.

Thanks for looking!ZBC1.jpg

Keep up the great work. Inspiring stuff :+1:

FANTASTIC EVER JOE !!!:grimacing:

Supercool new ones - thanks for posting :+1: ! Could you show/tell a bit more on how you sculpted the coins?

awesome work…:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

What i really love about your work is that you sculpt the characters like they are in the commic (world) books. I just watch them over and over again. :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

WOW! :grimacing:

Great posts Joe. Captain Marvel is fantastic! Sheriff too.

I am in awe of your work!
I have a question though on your Captain Marvel (the marvel comics version), do you use transpose master for your posing?

I ask because I’m working on a model right now, and when I’m using transpose master (with a zsphere rig), whenever I rotate his arms into a raised position, like your model, his chest, and especially his lat get completely mayhemmed.

I hope I’m not being rude, but I’ve posted images of what I mean:

Do you have a technique or rigging style that you could share?

Thanks, everyone:)

The swirl on Cap’s base will be translucent like the cosmic trail that follows him as he flies.

Meanboy…I actually sculpt in pose when its a scratch build like this. I did use symmetry in this case on the upper torso to make things easier but like to get the gesture down as part of the feeling of the piece during the very first pass on a job. I do do a lot of reposing of T posed video game characters (I reposed and engineered most of DC Direct’s DC Univers online statues using other artists models) but don’t post that stuff in my portfolio since it’s other peoples stuff.

I forgot…I did a bust of one of the Guardians from the new Green Lantern movie for DC Direct that they have advertised but haven’t put up any pictures…as soon as I get permission, I’ll add him here.

Thanks again, folks…I appreciate it anytime someone takes time out of their day to pause on this thread!!!
