Comic Book Character Sculpts

Meanboy, I’m sure someone’s got a better answer than this but all I do is just resculpt that area as best I can when stuff gets whacked out when transposing.
I do find that placing my rotation pivots EXACTLY at the relative skeletal joint of the limb I am moving helps out a whole lot and minimizes distorion.

Good luck.

HOLLYSH!T!!! Joe, these are awesome amigo!!! F R E A K I N G A W E S O M E!!! WOW!!! Keep on rocking!!!

Thanks, Alterton. Hope you are well. Get on Skype sometime you madman!!!

Etcher,
I draw my relief from the front and sculpt it from the three quarter views. I do all of my sub forms as sub tools which of course is way different than i would do it in clay but other than that, my techniques are the same as traditional relief sculpting. The Louis Slobodkin book on sculpture has good elementary relief info but if you can track down L.R. Rogers book on relief sculpture, that’s a great resource as is vol 1 of the lanteri series.

Perhaps you could try posing your model at a lower resolution to avoid so much pinching. But whatever the result, you may still need to fix you model up afterwards. Zspheres don’t know how things should look. They are just tools that come with standard settings so when you deform things, as an artist, only you can make things look right.

Good luck with your model.

MM is right from my experience, transpose at a lower sub d level. If the joint looks wonky, smooth at the lower level to clean it up a bit, then when you go back to the high res version you will have less to deal with but it’ll still need some fixing.

Thanks for the info :sunglasses: :+1: I’m a total noob when it comes to relief sculpture - I love those coins; they look deceivingly simple but contain so much depth!

absolutely fantastic work joseph. marvel looks so cool.

Brilliant work, congratz!

I echo what Etcher is sayin! Please can you let us know how you went about the coins relief sculpture, they’re perfect, and like Etcher said so much depth yet simple! What was the overall technique??

Thanks in advance

5*

…its really just simple traditional relief techniques…there’s no secret…if you can do it in clay, you can do it here.

i just build up the forms from flat planes and go for it.

I do keep the individual objects separate from the background as subtools in order to get clean divisions but that’s about it.

Relief relies HEAVILY on sound drawing and that’s what has to drive your understanding and execution.

I’m sorry i don’t have time to demo or add support pics now due to my schedule but I really appreciate you checking this out

nice work my friend~:+1:

Congrats on Top Row, Joe! Always nice to see new stuff from you. Awesome job on these, I GOT to pick up that Rick Grimes when it comes out. Loved “The Walking Dead”
