Comic Book Character Sculpts

I don’t only use zbrush, although most of my actualy sculpting goes on in it.

I use a combination of different apps, depending on what mood I’m in and where I am habit-wise at the time…I need to keep trying different ways of doing stuff or it gets old really fast.

The way I start a project will depend on the compositional needs so it really depends…

Don’t mean to be ambiguous.

I need to get into the new zspheres stuff ASAP but I’m usually jammed up I don’t have time to study new stuff until it’s already old stuff!!!

That War Machine is awesome:grimacing: Always inspiring. Great job:+1:

Thanks, MJ!

Here is my latest project: Michael Keaton as Batman. The statue was done for DC Direct. I’m also including my bust from another post…I meant to post it here but posted as a new thread by mistake…the screen grabs were done outside of Zbrush as I was preparing the files for prototyping.

I do love your sculpts. I wonder though, if the texture in Batman’s cape looks too big. It seems more noticeable without the painting applied.

Thanks!
When you sculpt for prototyping and especially for mass production, you need to exaggerate certain types of detail and texture to make sure they don’t get lost downstream. Multiple processes such as molding, casting, painting, etc will typically wash out detail and it can be tricky to find the right balance of necessary and enough. Even with all that I’ve done I am still learning and trying to find that balance. I appreciate your comments and will keep at it:+1:

I don’t know the film or game industry well enough to know if there are any analogs but anticipating what the final product will look like at the digital stage is definitely a challenge. I should note that these are also only the painted prototypes and the actual product might look different.

This thread is just great, thanks a lot for sharing! :+1:

What is the general cost for printing like this, and does it differ much between a model with/without paint? (not for single prints, for a large scale production)

Is there any printing company’s you can recommend?
Would be great to know since I’m thinking of doing some printing work in the future

Hey Bro! Nice stuff!
Ure so lucky to work on those projects

Cheers!

Brilliant work as always Joe!
Love the Keaton likeness , its spot on!
The output is very good!

Sweetness Joe! :+1:

Here are some 3 inch animation style articulated figures I did for some DC Comics direct to video releases…the figures are collectible premiums that come with the Best Buy DVD and Blu-Ray sets. This is all I can post for now but have some stuff I’m really excited to show in the not too far future, hopefully.

Owlman from Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths

Batman: Under the Red Hood

cant see the images Joe!

neither can I!!! ACKK!!!

In the words of Bugs Bunny, “What a Maroon!”

weird, they show up on this pc but not the one i was just on…i’ll figure it out:confused:

Nice Joe, I can see the images now. For some reason they weren’t showing up before. Freeform?

Very nice work Joe! I always enjoy your sculptures. Keep them coming.

Gabriel, thanks!

Brandon…for these I did most of the base modeling in Maya and then into ZB for shaping and forming…I go into FF to do a kind of global smooth…like putting a heat gun on a wax to get an all over kind of blended effect, then back to zb for more sculpting…then finally a final scribe pass back in FF to pop out all of the stuff that I want to show up at 3 inches…

for those not doing stuff for output…you have to push certain stuff beyond what is “right” depending on scale…it’s kind of like the opposite of what I imagine film modeling is like…for smaller scale stuff, sometimes you have to skip the tiny stuff which won’t show up and push the bigger forms to make them “pop”. That’s why I put all of the heavy scribe lines…at 3 inches these little dudes look okay…
I have a crappy camera but will try to take pics of the samples I have to show the actual product.

B-plus all of the articulation in FreeForm, although in these only the arms and head have swivel joints. For engineering crazy articulation, et al…FF is key for me…you can engineer the hell out of anything with it
