My English it is not my first language so I am sorry if I will do some mistakes.

I saw many head sculpting, and I am wondering how “zbrushers” combining these heads to the body? and Is these sculpting require new topology (retopology), or it can be done by clicking the “right button”.

I personally think It needs retopology, but I am not sure that’s why I am asking because It might require some kind of “welding”, so please threat me like a newbie and please describe it in easiest way possible.

Three or four ways of going about it.


  1. Use Merge visible, retopo and reproject using Topology tools.
  2. Create a new base mesh outside of ZB including head and body, import it, and use “Project ALL” (subtools pallet) to project the head and body tools onto the new mesh.
  3. If the head and body points are perfectly aligned where they join, use “Merge visible” with the “weld” option on (it’s on by default.) I do not recommend this because it’s hard to get the alignment right on a complex form and more often than not, you will end up with a broke seam.
  4. In Zbrush 3.5 r3, Pixologic introduced remeshing, which will create a unified skin over multiple subtools. It’s called: Remesh All. Details of all the wonderful things you can do with remeshing (like boolean operations) is in your Zbrush_3.5_new_features.pdf, which can be found in your Zbrush install directory.

Thanks A lot for tips, I think that second method is the best for me, but I will try all and then I will see which one is the easiest one :slight_smile:

I personally use the second method quite a bit (lots of control of the topology, straight forward application.) The method can be enhanced by exporting a medium res proxy of the merged objects (around 100K polygons) that I can use as a background mesh in Modo or Silo.
