Combining a ZBrush sculpt with a new mesh topology

I’m working through a book called ‘Realistic Game Characters’ by Ryan Kingslien and I’m having issues with combining my ZBrush sculpt with a new mesh topology. The sculpt was re-tolopologized in ZBrush and brought into 3ds max to add ears, shoulders, eye bags, and a mouth bag (saved as OBJ). I selected my original sculpt and set it to the lowest subdivision level then I selected tool -> import and found the new mesh topology (saved as OBJ) and got a pop-up saying to press ‘YES’ to transfer high res details to the modified mesh (I pressed yes). It attempted to transfer all the sculpting I did earlier to the new topology, but the model contained many holes in the face and my symmetry wasn’t working. When I tried it again later the sculpting didn’t transfer to the new topology and now it isn’t working at all :(.

Has anyone had this problem before? And do you have any idea on how I might fix this? Help!

Thanks,

Aida

p.s. Using ZBrush 4

hi, try to add the new mesh as a subtool, and then project the details. then go in your old model to the lowest subdivision. select the new mesh and press project all. make sure only your new and old mesh is visible. (i don’t know how many other subtools you have). then go back to the old mesh and go a subdivison higher, and back to the new one an project all. then add a division to the new mesh and so on. if you get weird stuff, just smooth it out and go a division higher and project it again. if you go to the highest subdvisions in your old mesh, and add the same amount of subdivision in your new mesh and the press project all you will most likely get weird artifacts, that’s why i recommand this step by step projection.

i hope this is what your were looking for :- )

Hey Testudinis, thanks a lot for your help  I ran into another problem :frowning: After I transferred my old sculpt onto my new topology and fixed up one side of the face with the morph and zproject brush, I lost active symmetry (it was all wonky). Then when I tried to smart resym, starting at the lowest subdiv, it said "symmetry results 0%. symmetry points found. symmetry map was not found. Do you know what to so here?
Thanks

maybe try the smart resym in the highest subdevision, i never had that problem, sorry.
