Yes, exactly. You and me both, then… Hnnggg…
try this, at least to test:
- Quit ZBrush
- go in C:\Users\Public\Documentsc:\Users\Public\Documents folder on Windows or /Users/Shared/ on Mac OSX.
- rename the ZBrushData folder to something else
- launch ZBrush and try again.
If the problem is solved, then you probably have a preference issue. If not, well, it’s weird (then you can revert the ZBrushData folder name).
Tried it, had no effect on the issue either.
and it happens with all the models, including the ones provided by default in ZBrush?
It only happens with some models, but my workflow is the same every time. I managed to polypaint a model completely recently, and hoped that the issue had solved itself with 4r7.
Try holding Alt while dragging from the color swatch. Something I ran into quite awhile back.
Holding Alt should give you shaded colors but that’s not the problem as a Flat color render gives the same result.
One thing to check - with a model that gives the problem:
- Turn off the Edit button.
- Check that the RGB Intensity slider is at 100.
- Turn Edit back on.
Tried it, still had no effect on the problem. Could this be a bug with my version of Zbrush?
It might be a bug but I think that’s unlikely. Can you share a project file (ZPR) that has the problem? If it doesn’t happen with all files then it suggests there’s a setting or particular set up that causes it.
Okay, here is the project file:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/chzh0p3pkd95g4o/ZProject_Colour_Pick_Issue.ZPR?dl=0
Many thanks, I got that. I don’t get the problem. I cleared the mask you had applied and then picked and painted colors. They were always as expected.
EDIT: see below for possible solution.
OK, I’ve been getting the problem now. Try this macro to see if it helps.
Download the file and put it in your ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\Macros\Misc\ folder. Restart ZBrush and you should have a new button called Reset RGB in the Macro>Macros>Misc sub-palette.
Press the button to see if it corrects the problem.
Download here:
Did as you suggested, but am still getting the issue with the file I sent you earlier.
Are you pressing the button after loading the project? There are issues with the project and the macro solves them but you must press the button after loading.
Ah sorry, my mistake, I thought I had to press it after starting up the program. That did it! Thank you so much, this really helps me out!
Great, now I think we have a solution. If you encounter the problem then make sure you press the button and then save the project. That way eventually you will get rid of it.
What was the main issue? This is something I’m currently running into now. I haven’t been able to figure out what the issue is though. How did you fix it? The link above is no longer accessible or the script as well. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks, everyone!
Hi Menty,
The problem was because the RGB Intensity was set to less than 100 when Edit is OFF. This means the model is partially transparent and so the picked colors are not full intensity.
You can correct it by setting the Texture palette Image Plane>Reference Views>Model Opacity slider to less than 100, then resetting to 100. (You need to do this so that the model updates properly.)
And here is the original macro:

Thank you!!! I’ll give it a try!
