Colour picker making colours too dark

Hello there, fellow Zbrushians!

I have run into this issue a few times by now and simply can’t find a solution. I am starting to polypaint (by applying the SkinShade4 material to the model) and when I colour pick from the model, it picks a colour that is slightly darker and less saturated than what is actually applied to the model. This keeps happening with various brushes as well as materials, no change whatsoever. It happens right after startup too, nothing has been changed in the settings or preferences in that regard. I am starting to lose my marbles over it, since I really had to stop working on some projects for the mean time until the problem has been solved.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Best regards,
Fabrizio

How are you picking colors?

Hovering over the area I want to select from and clicking ‘C’.

Hmm, that’s a puzzle. Try this:

  1. In the Render palette, turn on Flat. This will render the model with flat color.
  2. Pick a color using the ‘C’ hotkey.

Is the color you pick is OK?

Nope, problem is still there. I am also using the standard blend mode under the Brush settings, Gradient under the colour picker box is turned off.

You mean that Brush>Alpha and Texture>Polypaint Mode is set to 1 ? Then I’m at a loss as to what is happening.

Yes, exactly. You and me both, then… Hnnggg…

try this, at least to test:

  • Quit ZBrush
  • go in C:\Users\Public\Documentsc:\Users\Public\Documents folder on Windows or /Users/Shared/ on Mac OSX.
  • rename the ZBrushData folder to something else
  • launch ZBrush and try again.

If the problem is solved, then you probably have a preference issue. If not, well, it’s weird (then you can revert the ZBrushData folder name).

Tried it, had no effect on the issue either.

and it happens with all the models, including the ones provided by default in ZBrush?

It only happens with some models, but my workflow is the same every time. I managed to polypaint a model completely recently, and hoped that the issue had solved itself with 4r7.

Try holding Alt while dragging from the color swatch. Something I ran into quite awhile back.

Holding Alt should give you shaded colors but that’s not the problem as a Flat color render gives the same result.

One thing to check - with a model that gives the problem:

  1. Turn off the Edit button.
  2. Check that the RGB Intensity slider is at 100.
  3. Turn Edit back on.

Tried it, still had no effect on the problem. Could this be a bug with my version of Zbrush?

It might be a bug but I think that’s unlikely. Can you share a project file (ZPR) that has the problem? If it doesn’t happen with all files then it suggests there’s a setting or particular set up that causes it.

Okay, here is the project file:

Many thanks, I got that. I don’t get the problem. I cleared the mask you had applied and then picked and painted colors. They were always as expected.

EDIT: see below for possible solution.

OK, I’ve been getting the problem now. Try this macro to see if it helps.

Download the file and put it in your ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\Macros\Misc\ folder. Restart ZBrush and you should have a new button called Reset RGB in the Macro>Macros>Misc sub-palette.

Press the button to see if it corrects the problem.

Download here:

Did as you suggested, but am still getting the issue with the file I sent you earlier.

Are you pressing the button after loading the project? There are issues with the project and the macro solves them but you must press the button after loading.
