colorized model importing obj with new UV's problem

I have a character that is polypainted and I would like to import a lower res mesh with a different UV layout so i can then color to texture.

I am having a problem where the color/texture looks fine before the obj import, but after I import the obj with the new UV’s the color/texture gets destroyed.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
