Hey everybody,
This is my first submission. My character is a coal miner from the early 1900s. I developed the miner at a character design workshop by Zack Petrock.
During my research on miners from that time period, I came across some really beautiful portrait pictures. Back then people starting to work in mines, under very primitive conditions, when they were 12-14 years old. You can imagine how they look like when they’re in their late 40s.
After the workshop finished I kept working and refining the character, basically going through the whole process over again.
I started by making a simple box model in Maya and blocking out the clothes, suspenders, shoes, etc. Everything else was done using ZBrush, including these simple renders.
What is left for me to do is making a pick axe, hat light and some other accessories. Finally pose and render it. Hope you like what I have so far.
great work love the feel of the cloth, really nice work
Awesome!!, really! the detail on his face, and all, his clothes the folds damn!, amazing!!
Nice too see your work posted here Rudy ! Great updates on the face and overall details, may I suggest perhaps to add some more “gravity” feeling to the clothes ?
Keep up the nice job mate ! Cheers =)
Wonderful work! He’s got just the right face for a coal miner - anxious, characterful and kind of ‘lived in’.
And all that fabric is so beautifully done!
Gorgeous!
TheGreenMachine Thanks dude, appreciate it!
Manzarek lol really flattered by you reaction, to funny. Thanks
Wai Nice to see you here! I absolutely understand what you’re saying. To be honest, I’d like to wait for the second pass on the winkles until the character is posed. Thanks for the advice though.
Fancenna Thank you very much. Good to hear that people understand why his face and expression is like that. Hopefully this evening I post some work I did for preparing the miner.
That’s a cool sculpt. It has a good feel to it and the details are real nice. I like the asymmetry you have worked into it too
Rudy
Really a fantastic job. Keep up the great work and keep posting.
Paul
Thanks Cap that a nice nice compliment and good observation
Gabo1991 Thanks Paul, it a good place to receive compliments but also a place to get intimidated by the amazing sculpts people are showing here. I’m definitely going to post more work, probably not as often as I would like to. I have some ideas for a next project.
Here are some pictures I started off with for the character design workshop. When that was finished I started over again but I used the current model as template. I collected some pictures of John Wayne and Paul Newman as reference, not to copy the face.
I hope to post a version of of his body soon. Cheers!

Guys, thank you very much. I appreciate the compliments. Nice to read people like the expression and see a personality in this character.
I wasn’t aware the miner looked like an actor, I certainly did not use him as reference
Hey all,
I’d like to share some steps I made during Zack’s workshop at CGS.
How you start a sculpt is not written in stone. This is one of the many approaches you can start off with.
Starting with a simple box model. At this stage you also define the weight of the character because it’s easier to move around with just a few verts. Keep the resolution as uniform as possible so the strokes detail will be the same over its entire body. After that I blocked out the clothes and accessories the same way.
Hope you liked the read. Cheers!Rudy

hey my classmate, it’s great to see your miner here, excellent work. I think that you’ve made great progress and I hope that Zack’s workshop gave you lot of experience and knowledge. I’m looking forward more stuff from you.
