cmiStudios training dvd's for zBrush

Bay is the fellow who basically started/defined edge loops, and his current work is the very Gollum that you have probably seen from Lord of the Rings movies. I’m sure he’s done a lot more too.

He’s a genious, and a pretty nice fellow. I’m pretty sure Bay is one of the reasons why Zbrush 2 turned out the way it did. You can see a lot about who Bay is at his site:

And this is a test he did with the Beta of Z2 just a few months ago:

And I agree about the zscripts. I would have had quite a few made already but each and every time I make one, it never replays back correctly. I’m pretty sure it’s human error, meaning my fault, so I’m not blaming Pixologic for that. It’s just frustrating when I’m deliberately being careful not to do anything wonky with my modeling, and it still messes up.

Wow thanks for the heads up on bay. I’ve browsed those forums 100 times. That is great. These DVD’s should turn out to be awesome.

Zscripts are very useful but I can definately see the value of a DVD. The problem with zscript is that you cannot rewind them to a few steps back to make sure you understand what just happened. They are cumbersome to create large projects that would require multiple steps.

About the masters not doing zscripts. A lot of these “masters” are profesional artists that would not always want to give away a model that might take them a lot of time an effort to create. They are willing to give away their knowledge sometimes for free but they might want to give away that model or might want to use the model in a personal project.

For these reasons I doubt that you’ll see a zscript that is more sophisticated than a DVD from a “master”

You know what I think is really cool about DVD formatted learning for ZBrush.
If they wanted to do this really well they could get down to the nitty gritty on whatever their covering on the DVD, but they could also provide a folder on the DVD which included some ZScripts, and ZTools, that give other examples of the technique’s used on the DVD in another situation to really solidify your understanding of what they are trying to get across, and could save more room for ZBrush application coverage in the DVD video.
ZScripts would be extremely beneficial in a situation such as this. ZScripts are small in size, and would take up very little space on a DVD ROM project folder.
They would provide learning material on a DVD that couldn’t be matched if they did.
The only thing is CMI studios usually doesn’t provide project folders, or files on their DVD’s.
At least there wasn’t any on the Shake set that I bought.
I think I’m going to email Chris about this. I think it would benefit those who purchased the DVD’s, and would probably help sell them as well.

We also need to talk Pixolator into doing one. No offense to any of the other artists, and ZMasers, but that would be the best seller for sure.
Although I’ll buy as many as they decide to produce.

Good idea wierdPal.

I just hope that cmiStudios does not focus on the animation market only. Zbrush is an outstanding illustration tool. They need to do one that focus on this area as well.

Looking forward to possible modelling and texturing DVD! :+1:

count me in for buying that dvd. as much as i love zbrush (still learning ) i do hate zscripts because i have to watch the entire session untill i have tha chance to try to recreate what i have seen. problem beeing that once i start myself i have forgotten most of the steps showed before . this is the benefit of having a video beside that i can pause and rewind as i need it. also i learn much better and quicker when i hear somebody talk about what i should do next, be it simply to tell me why i should do it. zscripts cannot deliver that intuitive learning, ok there are boxes popping up that tell me what to do but reading stuff un boxes that pop up all over the place isn´t as convenient as a gentil voice telling me what i need to know while my eye isn´t distracted by popping windows.

just my two cents.

Zscripts are cool and all, but just like someone here pointed out already. No playback, no voice, and no real explanations. So in my opinion DVDs are always better. Gnomon DVDs exist for such reason, because they are just simply better than some tutorials or books out there that are half explained and without visual and voice, whats there to learn? especially when you cant even play it back to see what was done…Your eyes has to be glued at all times for you to not miss a step or 2 or else you mess up the whole learning experience. In a movie, you can always miss or skip a few steps if you want and you can always put it back exactly where you left off or where you want the movie to start from.

So there is a huge advantage on movies. And someone also said something about that for beginners movies work better than zscripts. That is kinda funny to me because like i mentioned above, its not just for beginners, its for everyone who do not want to be glued to a screen for hours at a time. Its like you are being forced to watch or else you will miss the steps.

…Erm but I thought you could add voice and annotations to Zscripts…? Haven’t a few people already said that in this thread??!

The only advantage a video tutorial has is that there is rewind and pause etc. Please, can anyone let me (us) know if there is a script or update that will allow pausing, rewind and fast forward for a recorded Zscript!?

Oh, and video files can be literally thousands, even millions times the size of a Zscript, which can be a pain
