Clothes and retopo

Hi, I have some questions on retopo characters with clothes. I usually create a character’s clothes like a t-shirt by extruding it. This creates a new subtool, ok.

When I am done with the sculpting and polypainting I want to retopo, but I want to create one textures, not a texture and normalmap for each subtool.

So I combine the subtools to one (merge down), then use ZRemesher (UV-mapping…) and after that do a stepwise Project all til I projected all details. I many cases my clothes get corrupted during this process, holes appear in the shirt for example.

Is my workflow wrong? How do you guys handle this?

Kind regards

Jay NM

What is to be done with the model? Still image rendering or animation?

I plan retopo and then animation.

this is just a guess but when you are projecting have tried using different scan distance settings? that’s what might be messing you up. it might take a series of projections at different settings.

also keep in mind you are just doing this for the paint detail, so as long as the texture gets good paint detail, you can save the texture and then undo the projections.

Hm, ok, that’s right, I will try, thanks!
