cloning parts of object to itself

Howdy all,

I was wondering if there is a way to duplicate or clone part of an object to another area of the same object and still be editable. Say I have a high-detailed disp map of a volcano on a landscape and I want to copy this volcano next to the original without sculpting a new volcano; can this be done? I hope this doesn’t turn out to be a really stupid question

thanks,
ernia

p.s. boy, looking at the gallery here, there are some fine artists using this app. Really nice stuff, people.

Thanks for the reply edonkey, but I was hoping this could be done on the same mesh–taking one area of a mesh and recreating it in another area of the same mesh. I know the symmetry options do this, but what if the clone is not in symmetry?

thanks,
ernia

clone:small_orange_diamond: tool
you now will have 2 of the same tool.

now CTRL + Shift drag to hide or show which one you want moved,
take your original tool with the one that is part hidden
and use the Marker tool

Hi ernia,
This is easy to do using Projection Master. Just remember that your mesh must have enough polys to support the detail. Your model must be a polymesh.

  1. Clone your volcano model. Save both, so that you do not loose your work.

  2. Draw one vocano clone on the canvas and enter Edit mode. Ctrl+Shift+drag the green rectangle so that it covers the volcan only. Release the mouse and the rest of your model will be hidden. Go to Tool> Geometry and press Delete Hidden. Press Tool>Deformation>Unify. Exit Edit mode and clear the canvas.

  3. Draw your landscape on the cnvas, enter Edit mode and press the Projection Master button. You can uncheck Colors if you’re not painting a texture map at this time. Click OK.

  4. Select your volcano tool from step (2). Draw it on your landscape and position it with the Gyro. With Move or Rotate selected drag up and down outside the Gyro so that the volcan is at the right depth. You can use the Smudge brush to soften the edge if necessary. Place more volcanos in the same way, then press PM button again to pick up.

HTH,

Ahh! Thanks very much gents; that helps out tremendously.
