Cleaning Scan Data with Zbrush

Hello All,

I am working on a project that involves scanning a series of dinosaur bones using a laser scanner, so full skeletons can be reconstructed digitally. These scanned models, although highly detailed, are rampant with holes and vast cavities throughout the resulting mesh which now need to be filled and then retouched in a sculpting program to remove imperfections.

I am wondering if there is an easy way to achieve this in Zbrush without having to retopologize the mesh by hand. I am working with several archaeology students that are not very familiar with 3D modeling.

Can someone point me in the right direction or know of some good tutorials that explain other ways of achieving this? It would be much appreciated.

duplicate your subtool
convert the mesh into a dynamesh
depending on the quality of the scan you may or may not want to increase the dynamesh resolution
project the new mesh onto the old one.
subD up the new mesh to the required polygon count
store a morph target
project again
clean any imperfections by using the morph brush and then resculpting the lost details in that area.

Thanks! That worked extremely well

What scanner hardware and software are you using?

Usually the scanning software should have noise cleanup and also fill in holes.
