Clay Tubes and Smoothing

I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

I am trying to get my head around ZBrush and was wondering if someone could please help me out.

When I have a gash in my model, I have been filling the hole using clay tubes. It has been working fine, except when I go to smooth it. It somewhat smoothes it, but at the same time open’s up the hole again. How should I fill a hole so it doesn’t open up again when I go to smooth it.

Thanks for your help.

The problem is that ZBrush’s sculpting tools push and pull polys. When you’re filling in the hole, that’s not really what you’re doing. You’re just pulling polys from one place and stretching them over the hole. Smoothing relaxes that, and then you’re back to having a hole.

The best way to close a hole is to use retopology. You can either construct a new mesh without the hole and shrink wrap it to match the original or you can edit the polys of the existing model and create polys to cover the hole. http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Topology

Auric,

Thanks for your help. That makes sense. And also thank you for the link. I will get my head around it and will be able to clean my mesh up.

Thanks for helping out a beginner.
