Classic Skinning Problem

I’m attaching three image files. The first shows a simple armature. The second shows the adaptive skin preview. The third shows exactly the same armature with classic skinning. I’m hoping to understand two issues:

First, the zspheres on the armature seem to be aligned on the x-axis, so why is there even a slight twist to the skin, as shown in the preview.

Second, why is the classic skin grossly twisted while the default skin is not?

I want to use the classic skin to practice making edge loop sockets from negative zspheres. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Doc Pit

Let me just add a piece to this. The problem of the twisted classical skin can be corrected by rotating an individual zsphere, which suggests that the switch to classical skinning creates an unwanted rotation of at least one zsphere. So, I guess my post really comes down to this: Is there a way to prevent that?
