I am using the Cinema 4D Core which only comes with basic displacement settings so I need to use a HyperNurb object which subdivides the mesh and sort of “Fakes” the displacement. As you can see from my image it isn’t going so well.
In Cinema 4D my Displacement height and strength are set to: 100 and my HyperNurb Object is set to:
Subdivision Editor: 3
Subdivision Renderer: 4
What settings do I need to use to get the Cinema 4D render to look like my ZBrush render or is this even possible?
Make sure that you activate Sub-Polygon Displacement for the Displacement Channel in Cinema 4D. Without that you loose the amount of detail. That is my experience with a model i imported lately from modo. It’s important that you choose the right type of displacement (Intensity, RGB Local, etc.) for your displacement image. Then try to find the best value for the Subdivision Level in the Sub-Polygon Displacement section. Default is 4 and maybe it’s enough. You can go up to 12 but that eats your CPU. With the other parameters you have to try what is best with that kind of model.
I don’t think I have the option to select that in the “Core” version of Cinema 4D. IMO Maxon really crippled the core version by not giving users the extra displacement setting needed for good displacement. I could be wrong but I’m sure I don’t have the extra settings you talk about. I don’t see any settings for: Intensity, Round edges, RGB or Local like other 3D apps include.
Do you have the core version? Does anyone know if I can achieve the look of the ZBrush image using the core version of Cinema 4D? Here are my displacement settings.
I checked that. Subpolygon-Displacement is part of the Advanced Render module. That one came bundled with my version. Sorry, but i think you have no chance without that module within Cinema 4D.
And i cannot recommend only buying the advanced render module for $595 if i compare that e.g. with what you get with Luxology modo for a price tag of $995: A sophisticated modeler with a fast rendering engine. If you want to upgrade your Cinema 4D check out the bundles. But only you can say what you want to invest and what modules you need.
