Chopped Edges when Dynameshing a Maya model

So I’ve got a super simple model I made in Maya for a project that I was hoping to detail in Zbrush and create a normal map from. However when I Dynamesh it the edges are getting completely chopped up. How do I keep this from happening? Thanks.

Doesn’t look like you have very much thickness. You may have to mask the whole thing and perform an extract. What size is your document? Also what was the Dynamesh resolution? Your image didn’t have the UI with any settings we could see(sometimes helpful).

Dynamesh is based on volume. If your volumes are too thin Zbrush assumes you’re trying to make a hole…hence all the holes.

Anyway, either scale your model up so it has a larger volume, or increase the area of the sections in question.

Thanks! When you say ‘scale the volume up’ do you mean increase the amount of poly’s at those points?

No, what they mean is that your model needs more “thickness” in that area. Think of a standard cube in Maya, then imagine you take the top poly and move it down as far as you can. The farther you move the top poly down the thinner your model, right?

Have you tried increasing the DynaMesh resolution?

Try this. Ctrl+left click on canvas to mask the whole thing. Under Subtools at bottom you may wish to uncheck double sided and adjust thickness to a small value then press extract, if happy then press accept. If you don’t click accept, it goes away, make changes to your settings and try again. You may need double sided for what you want. The extracted mesh will have masking applied.
