Well - for the last week I haven’t been able to do any work on things cuz I’ve been volunteering as a counselor at a summer youth camp… but that was really enjoyable getting to work with some kids and give back a bit…
Anyways - I did still manage to get started on the face rigging… it’s just about a day’s work of blendshapes and skinning - so still really rough… Here’s a quick render of the shapes test…
BLENDSHAPE TEST
It isn’t really animated all that well- just kinda set some random keys of the extremes of the shapes to see how they would blend together…etc… So far I’m happy - the eye blink shape needs some work… but other than that - I’m mostly happy with the rest of shapes…
It was really kool seeing this guy move for the first time… hehe.

Ok - so did some more work on the face rig… added in some fleshy eyes effect as well as did some minor fixes to some of the faceshapes… Just made some really quick keyframes to test out the extremes of the shapes and also the eye movement… etc.
Now i just need to finish up the skinning and rigging of the rest of the body - then it’s onto animation…

Ok - so started on the final for the elf… a short piece of animation to show off the model.
I’m not a particularly good animator - so sorry for my crappy animation! haha… I just started it today - so far it’s just pose-to-pose… Still have alot of work to do - cleaning it up and doing inbetweens, etc…
The camera work is some footage I shot on my digital camera and tracked in Maya-Live for the shaky-cam movement… Still not happy with it - i think I’ll have to go in and adjust it a bit by hand - but at least it gives me a good base to start with.
Here’s the test render i did last night:
Here’s my to-do list:
Textures - eyes need viens, more variation on hood texture, refine colour on quiver, adjust shader for jacket/shirt cloth material, darken straps, adjust peach fuzz on cloth, reduce translucency on hood material - Fix UVs on uppereyelids.
Animation:
- Refine camera movement (shake too much).
- Put in rot of spine for breathing
- Make glances quicker, and loosen up body movement
- Put in head turns for the eye “looks”
- Make funny face faster and more extreme - add anticipation
- Eye blinks
- Fix weighting issues
- Adjust curves on faceshapes
- Secondary motion of shoulder armour
Also need to work out the background… so I’ll have to go get those pictures from the location i scouted… Then I’ll have to readjust the lighting to the environment again I guess.
HAIR - need to do eyebrows, eyelashes and some stubble.
Well - lots of work to do! Better get crackin!

Ok - so I’ve started the rendering headache that is hair… ugh… This is so painful with just one machine to work on. Anyways - this is my first pass at it… Using Shave & Haircut for Maya… it’s pretty simple - except i can’t get it to separate the hair and shadow so I can do passes… so I might just have to render it as one pass…
Plus I’m running short on time… so hopefully i can pull it off in time!
Anyways - probably gotta up the anti-aliasing a bit for the renders and also maybe add some more segments to the hairs - especially those eyebrows - so they don’t see so harsh…
Also gotta re-render the depth pass with the hair in it now…
If anyone’s got any advise on Shave and making passes for your hair - please share!!! I’m a real newb at shave hair… thanks!

Really awsome stuff!
What did you think of Vancouver Film School. I love some of the work they put out and am thinking of going there myself… someday. Im currently going to San Jose State, near San Fransisco. THier Animation and Illustration’s are stellar but thier CG, Maya, Zbrush is lacking a bit.
I do plan on trying to breath live in the computers/students at SJSU but am thinking about attending VFS at some point.
Loved the 2008 reel.
Website needs work/coding, everything is html and slices.
Can’t wait to see your progress on the man/lion hybrid!

Mrguy - Hey man - thanks! VFS was awesome!! I really learnt alot there and it was well worth it! Definitely would recommend it! (Altho as with any school - it’s only as good as what you put in - so prepare yourself for a year of hell and alot of sacrifices!)

Well - I’m back from my trip - SIGGRAPH was awesome! Applied to alot of different places - so hopefully something works out in the job search…
I started a new metamesh today - for male and female… I’m gonna start doing some quick sculpts as anatomy studies… I think I need to add more anatomy study stuff to my portfolio - plus the practice couldn’t hurt.

jjvdb15 - Thanks! Rig for which character? The elf I’m assuming…
He was a pretty simple setup - did a couple blends for major facial muscle groups - they were inbetween blends - so to create a more non-linear motion… as done in the hyper-real facial setup DVDs by alias… Body was just a simple scripted rig setup I have now… - The eyes were probably the most complex thing on the rig - did a fleshy eyes setup - combination of painting slight weights on the skin around the eyes to eye-joints and also using blends as well as sculpt deformers parented to the eye-geo to cause the movement of the bulge from the cornea of the eyes on the eyelid skin.
Not working right now - still looking for a job and waiting for responses from a couple of companies I applied at… hopefully something will come through! It’s tough out there…
Other than that - i just have a small freelance project - working on a character for a small cg feature.
Ok - so i made some major topo changes to the male mesh cuz of some issues i foresee with sculpting the old mesh… mainly changing to cleaner topo to allow for more freedom to sculpt.
