Here is my second attempt at a 2d painting in Zbrush. Since i was already familiar with the subject, i thought i would try doing another piece of monkeys, this time in color. This one took a whole lot longer than my first piece which can be seen here. Just like most traditional painting, color seems to take longer. Each hair was an individual stroke, so as you can see it got kind of tedious. But after all of those billions of hairs, i am very pleased with the result. I will be posting a walkthrough a little later, so check back later.

Here is a little step-by-step of how i did this piece. this is just one way to work, but there are many others. i am still trying to figure out what works best for me. there is no right or wrong way to work.
first block in the basic shapes and colors with a large brush at a low intensity
refine the baisc shapes and colors with a smaller higher intensity brush. Don’t worry about getting the exact lines you want, just keep it rough
use the smudge tool and the blur brush with various alphas to start bringing things together
work in some detail on a section of the piece with a smaller brush (i started on the upper right)
while working in the detail, use the various tools (highlighter brush, blur/sharpen brush, contrast brush, and smudge tool) to enhance the picture
continue to work in the rest of the detail zooming in and out
add textures by using various alphas and changing the settings in the stroke pallet (i used the colorspray stroke for the skin)
add finishing touches with the highlighter and very small brushes
