Character Project: Demi: WIP

Oy. Long time lurker, first time poster here. Been trying to homeschool myself in Zbrush, mainly character design. My first project is a character named Demi. While I’ve come a long way from not knowing how to rotate the screen in Zbrush I keep hitting snags. This is actually my fifth time restarting this project and I figured it was about time to post what I have to get some feedback. For starters I’ll put up some 2D art as kind an introduction to the character.

I’m happy with the body generally. Some issues with the head, haven’t bothered with the super high detailing at all yet. Legs and arms have been divided in different tools since they’re going to be wrapped. Also generally please with the belt. (minus the flaps) the side of the belt needs a little more work. And I am really unhappy with her top. topolgy doesn’t follow the folds. I figured it wouldn’t matter but now it’s really annoying me. especially around the collar it just looks terrible. Any comments are appreciated.

Also been looking high and low for a tutorial on lacing. the stitch alpha is good for things if you not planning on having any holes. But what about stuff like shoe laces? Again, any comments appreciated. Cheers.

Really nice (st)art! I think you may have to study a bit more in terms of anatomy for your ZBrushed model, for example the inner thigh is too thin, making the ‘gap’ look wider than it should.

There are a few more bits and bobs that i could pick on, but to be fair, its a good start.

Thanks for the comment. well timed too since I got rid of all the clothes (saw a couple new tutorials with stuff I wanna try) and was about to start posing her. Cheers.

Your 2D work is really nice though, really cool style.

Colours are great, wish i could make mine like that :stuck_out_tongue:

Alright so a bit on an update. Basically I went back and redid the cloths so they were more like the reference pics, and added swords… Hellz yeah swords!

And as for the clothes. This was kind of difficult, mainly the pleasted shirt and there’s still some issues with it.

The problem is simple. the pleats arn’t uniform and overlap like helltried several times modeling but was never happy with the jaggies. So then I did a rough model and retopo’d giving extra geometry around the edges. The pinch brush help me insure they have a nice flow. They don’t quite overlap properly, as you can see where it gets close to the color. But I think a texture can take care of that. Or I may add some kickass armor.

I also tried using one flattened colomn, wrapping it around demi and then duplicate>move>Merge visable but that was too many pieces I think… Maybe I should have just tried to major pieces… next time.

Redoing the undergarment was fun. First time I ever used more than one subtool for one piece of clothing. Did the same thing with the sword wraps after. Planning on doing so again with the belt thingy.

Also you’ll notice no arms… haven’t even started on them yet. and they look really bad so I excluded them from most of the pics.

Also still trying to figure out how to make that stitching between two pieces of clothing like the chick from the age of conan in the link below. Damn that artist kicks ass It kind looks like something involving zsphere and mesh insert… maybe… I dunn headslam Back to work.
