changing materials

hi all
I’m new in this community and quite new with ZBrush

I watched some tutorial and everything worked fine with my previous works. It happened now that I can
controll only the material of my first subtool (I mean clicking color-> fill object). For all the other subtools (ie 2 polysphere, a plane3D and 3 different fibermeshes) it is automatically applied the material which I select in the menu on the left (under brushes, strokes, alphas etc). This only happends on this current tool. I don’t have this problem if I load other tools

oh, and this happens regardless if I select MRgb, Rgb or M…

Can you explain to me what happened and how can i fix this.

thank you very much, and I hope I’m in the right section of the forum

ciao!

The currently selected material and color is applied to any subtool that doesn’t currently have a material and color manually stored (through a texturemap or through polypaint).

If a subtool has a material stored to its polypaint (such as if you use Color: Fill Object with M/MRGB on), then it will display that material, regardless of what material you currently have selected in the material thumbnail, until the new material is reapplied to its polypaint. If you want it to revert to the default behavior then two options are:

  • Temporarily disable polypaint but clicking on the paintbrush next to the Subtool’s name (alternatively, with the subtool selected use Tool: Polypaint: Colorize)
  • Permenantly remove the stored material by selecting the FlatColor material, and filling the subtool with M or MRGB on

thank you very much for the quick and detailed answer. You almost solved my problem. I applied (using fill object) the proper material to all the subtools and, as you said, changing the material in the “material menu” doen’t change the applied material of the subtool… with the exception of the last subtool

the last subtol is the grass. I applied a skeleton material. then I switched the material in the menu, without applying it and i can notice some difference in the color. I’ll send you some pictures

the first two pictures have skeleton material applied and Chrome A selected in the menu (rendered and not rendered)
grass with chrome A selected not rendered.jpggrass with chrome A selected.jpg

These two other pictures have skeleton applied and selected in the menu
grass with skeleton selected not rendered.jpggrass with skeleton selected.jpg

It doesn’t matter which subtool I have selected in the subtool menu, always and only the grass subtool changes)
