Fantastic Work KrakenCMT!
Thanks, guys!
vongn,
No, I’m just going to render the final in ZBrush. For the final rendering of the challenge that this model was entered for (now long over) I did a final rendering of him in Lightwave. But didn’t have the time to finish him the way I wanted - with war paint and in a scene.
ZB3 seems to be rendering him really well, so I think I will stick with it for the final scene rendering as well.
I was afraid you just abandoned you Conan sculpture. Work has a tendency of getting in the way of the important things in life  . In any event when thinking about any setting you might look for inspiration from Boris Vallejo.
His minimalist settings would work very nicely for Conan. “You can trust Steel”
Wow. That is a really good sculpt of our fine state’s Governor! Seriously though, while the movie is horrible in a great many ways (I liked it MUCH more when it came out), that is an amazingly good likeness.
My favorite scene from the movie for those older artists here:
Conan strikes the head from James Earl Jones and holds it aloft to a sea of candles being held by JEJ’s followers. Is it just me, or would it be a perfect time to cue up a song?
I’d like to teach the world to sing / in perfect harmony / I’d like to buy the world a Coke / and keep it company
Heh.
Yeah,
I can think of a few other snake like politicians that the “Govenator” could take care of now!
Very impressive! You not only capture his likeness but also his body shape. Most people may think that all muscular bodys looks alike, but the truth is that the are as individual as the face. Thanks for sharing.
I finally had some time to finish Conan up in the scene. I used Ivy Generator for the ivy. Rendered in ZBrush 3 in 3 passes - diffused color, spec, and shadows. Then composited together and touched up some of the lighting in Photoshop. Glad I’m finished with him. I know there’s some areas that could have been developed further, but I need to move on to another personal project. Time to put this one to bed.
A Hi Res version of the image can be found HERE
very cool work KrakenCMT.
Kraken,
I’ve watched this character with avid interest. No piece of artwork is ever finished !!! But, in my humble opinion you’ve captured everything that makes Conan, Conan! Since your a fellow Lightwave user I’d like to pick your brain on the hair, because it is outstanding. I’m working on a series of character and SASlite kinda sucks. I’m not doing any animation, so I’m considering just sculpting the hair in ZBrush and painting in details post.
In any event this work deserves top row and if the ZBrush Gods don’t put it there, “Then to hell with them!”
Great work and thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks hyper1!
Since I made the decision to use ZBrush for the final rendering, I ended up making just a simple seperate hair piece for his head and sculpted it into the basic shape of his hair. Then after the model was dropped to the canvas in 2.5D, I used the snake hook brush with a very small tip to pull out individual strands and clumps. If you use the Alt (or Option buttonon Mac as I have), the snake hook extrudes backwards into space rather than forward which helps for making the hair strands look like they go behind the model.
Obviously this won’t work for Lightwave since the hair strands were made in 2.5D, But you could still pull out some larger clumps with the snakehook perhaps and then in Photoshop paint in the finer strands.
Crom!!! This is good. I just bought this movie incidentally and i love the illustration. Im just glad you didnt model anything from that horrible sequel, Conan the Destroyer. There are very few movies as bad as that one. They should’ve had Oliver Stone write the sequel too.
HIGH ADVENTURE!!!
KrakenCMT,
Nice to see this one wrapped up, outstanding work. The background is top notch, though, I think my personal preference would be to have seen something else in the background. Regardless your work speaks for itself. Should be a very happy at the end result.
Keep up the great work, be nice to see more soon!!
Hi. I know this may seem like a huge request, but… if there is any possibility, KrakenCMT, can you please, and I beg you, make a conan render like this, with conan obriens face?
http://l.yimg.com/img.tv.yahoo.com/tv/us/img/site/55/42/0000035542_20061026015238.jpg
My friends and I are almost sure of heading to a Cone zone show in May, and we want to have something like this on some shirts to get on tv. I saw your render and nearly shat myself with how damn good it looked. I was hoping for something like this with Conan Obrien’s head and hair, but I am terrible at photoshop/gimp, and don’t know how to render stuff like this in the least bit. I wouldn’t even need any detail, just this this pic with no background or anything.
Any help, comment, acceptance or rejection would be reallllllllllllllly appreciated!!! Thanks for reading the post!
Very very Cool Kraken! Awesome that you sticked with it untill it was something impressive! Love the subject, love the render.
Very good, Christopher, congrets.
You covered Arnie in all major aspects.
Impressive work.
Huh, there are too many problems…small hands, very schematic joints, and musculature. It reminds to Conan by Arnold, but somehow lacks the power that Arnold represented to the character.
sweet jeesus, that hair looks awsome. Can you show us that tut on the hair? The ink seems to be down.
very good, but the hands look too small, and the foot is too flat. the upper part should be higher. And besides that the whole arm is a bit off. I think you should give more dynamism to the changes of the volumes over the arm. All in all too me it lacks of dynamism.
nice. i just clicked on this thread without reading and i could instantly tell that it was arni. exellent work.
Thanks for the crit, Jester. I didn’t have time to finish the feet in the allotted timeframe. But I didn’t need to anyway since it was going to be covered up by his boots.
I don’t know why his hand appears too small. Maybe it’s the angle of the rendering or something, but I checked the proportions as I was creating it and remember that his hand from bottom of palm to tip of fingers ran from the bottom of his chin to almost the middle of his forehead which seems about right. Again, it’s probably the angle of the render or the perspective settings.
But to shine a little bit of light into this, this was my very first time sculpting a human form. I learned a ton, but I am by no means an expert yet. But I confess I am a bit proud of how it came out considering. I didn’t know I could do it.
When I do another figure, I’ll be sure to keep your other points in mind. My goal is to only get better. And I’ll be looking over Scott Eaton’s methods very closely. Thanks!
rubent100,
Looks like they changed the site around a bit. Here’s another link to that tutorial.
