Celebs head :)

Nice modeling, my only crits are about the edges in the ear structure that are a bit to sharp I think, as for the outer borders of the nostrils, and also the mouth borders looks a bit weird.
The likeness works well, maybe her jaw should be thinner, anyway congratulation.

Your skin shader seems to work really well, the SSS effect is subtle enough and the specularity works fine. Try it first with a classic 3 lights setup but contrasted to better feel the SSS effect, 2 coming from the sides with one stronger than the other plus 1 strong back light for the ears And when you 'll put the diffuse textures try to keep it desatured as much a possible, this is the key for a good skin shader.
By the way, Do you know the Zap Anderson’s tutorial ( get it here: http://www.lamrug.org/resources/skintips.html) it’s very informative about The MR fast SSS Shader.

I’d be curious about your displacement rendering process in Max:
-Did you use the MR displacement node of the Skin shader or the Displace modifier?
-700 000 Polys is polycount of the model imported straight out from Zbrush or is it after smoothing?
-what was your render time with such anamount of poly + SSS at what resolution?

Thank you

SUper nice!

Jut I have the feeling that the top of the ckull is a bit too low…

Ive oftens een that the eye are at the middle of the face… You might not nee to go this far, but maybe you can try to push it up, to see what it gives…

Nice ork man!

The jaw, looks same as taht on the foto, so i think it works fine  and i like your ears they are ok :+1: btw i cant believe that you modeled it so realistic  lowe to see it textured, go man, go !!! you have talent for this

thx for the critics

I already tweaked parts that u guys mentioned, I didn’t touch the jaw though…

Silmaeth - I use displace modifier, its imported from zbrush at 21000 poly (it says 43000 poly in max though) and added turbomesh lv2. The render took around 5-7 mins at 1024-768 res.

I just bought ‘closer’ dvd just to see natalie portman  , havent watched it, but I hope it will help quite a bit

finally…eyes ! :stuck_out_tongue:

they are not that good, but this is my first eyes, so…
Maybe someone can give tips to make better eyes? by using 3dmax though…especially the material…

as for the eyebrows…it’s using hair&fur from 3dmax 8, it didn’t work with raytrace shadow, so I had to composite 2 renders…

skin looks very nice, looking forward to seeing her completed…

Hi again
hers’s my settings for making eyes with MR in Max:
[EYES.jpg]SettingsSSS.jpg

And of course you have to set the scaling factor according to your scene scale

Eyeball.jpg

…And for the Eyebrows, the MR prim mode in the hair render settings works good.
It is made for MR in raytrace shadows

hope it was helpfull
Good luck

oh wow !! thank you so much !

thats just perfect :+1: :+1:

thank you once again

latest update…

thx so much for the eyes and hair tips !!

so, before I move on, any nit picking critics perhaps??

amazing eyes! bravo, thanks for info!:+1:

wow, first thing that strikes me is the likeness. great!

i’ll have to look at some reference images to come up with any intelligent crits
i’ll be back

no doubt, amazing info Silmaeth :+1:

here is a compilation of reference images I mainly focus on

nataliereferences.jpg

could you post a picture with more of an angle? like in the bottom left of the reference you posted.

Nice stuff, keep us updated!

great model and render

nice render…subsurface is looking nice…maybe with a brigther key light, and a bright rim it would reallly stand out. the modeling of the ear bothers me a little bit…check the anatomy…what did you use for eye lashes and brows?

more angle view…

nataliesideview2.jpg

I changed the reflection on the eyes…

hmmm, I think the ear already really close to her ear…I may be wrong though…

I made the hair using hair&fur from 3dsmax8

edit: added the side view

Very impressive likeness of Natalie Portman. Particularly difficult to achieve I imagine, as she doesn’t have any overly unique features like a wonky nose to make it easier to identify her.

I think the eye reflections in the latest do not improve things. They look more glassy and dead. Eyes aren’t actually that reflective. Have you tried adding a bump to the whites? Usually only the cornea looks smooth compared to the whites which have a slightly ‘mottled’ bump coupled with the bump of the very fine blood vessels. This will help improve the speculars/reflections.

Keep going with this. It has the potential to be one of the best cg likenesses I’ve seen :+1: :+1:

while trying to render the hair, I realized I forgot to bring all the maps (disp, bump, texture, etc) to the laptop (except the eyes), so I fired it up anyway to see the hair result…in turns out like this…a very interesting barbie doll render hehehe

just a fun picture to share

the hair was done using hair&fur from 3dmax 8
