cavity maps

hi everyone,

Could someone point me to where cavity maps are generated in 3.5 now that zmapper is defunkt? I’m sure this has been asked a million times so if you could just pass a link to where it’s talked about, that would be a big help. Thanks for the time.

Use the Tool>Masking>Mask By Cavity button to create the mask. Then Tool>Masking>Create Alpha to convert the mask into a map that you can export from the Alpha palette.

The Masking menu also has other great ways to create maps, including the new Ambient Occlusion mask generation.

Do you still have control over the depth of the cavity map like you did with ZMapper? Just curious. I don’t recall there being a depth option when you mask by cavity.

I am faily new to zbrush what are cavity maps is that like displcement or normals? thanks

sebastianf, cavityMaps are BlackGrey and white, they show you the presence of details like pores and wrinkles in your model in black and grey. You can use cavityMaps to enhance the appearance of details like wrinkles, they make the wrinkles dark. You also can use them to benefit the result of the specular of your model. Hope this helps.

dustinbrown, as far as I know there is no way to control the cavityMap like it was possible with ZMapper. You have just a really rough control over the result if you combine cavity Masking with ambient occlusion Masking. This gives you in real less control over the result and is in my point of view a huge back step in generating Cavitymaps. I wonder why they have removed the ZMapper options?

My guess is they either found new users were put off by ZMapper, or they were simply looking to consolodate the UI for simplicity. I’ll admit I find the Expert tabs in ZMapper esoteric, but there has to be a happy medium between that and completely removing control from the user.

I have never liked the ambiguity of the UI sliders in ZMapper. They don’t have a numeric field on them so you have nothing definitive to go on except how long the orange line is.

Thanks Hawkeye so im guessing its just zbrushs name for a bump map I usually use normal maps so I dont really see any use for them. But good to know i thought maybe it was something more fancy

Its nothing to do with bump maps. Its used with the texture for example to enhance the visual definition of wrinkles or use as a fake ambient occlusion.

The Create Alpha button is blacked out. What the F are you supposed to do?
