Cavity Detection in BPR

Hi, I’m building a shader for a model I’m working on, and wanted to have cavity darkening, but it doesn’t seem to work in BPR. Matcap cavities do work however, so I’m currently using a matcap pasted into a quadshader to get the effect I want. Problem is, now I have no control over my specularity as it is built into the matcap.

Am I doing something wrong? How can I get cavity effects working in BPR without resorting to matcap.

Matcaps are bad to use with lights right? If Matcaps are the only way to make it automatic, would I be best to just paint the recessed areas using cavity masks?
