After Senior Member Etcher_Sketcher was good enough to concisely explain his process, I went back and, through trial and error, figured out how to get the illustrative look I was after - these are in order:
Aside from the gradated background (and the tens of layers composited per picture) these are unaltered renders out of 4r8. Both were designed to be seen from one angle (specific drawings of Jim Starlin from the early 1970s) and so look a little odd in the different angles above - this is the KeyShot render in environment:
