I know with one of my made up faces and sss i can get a freak made of skin.
But - how do you get likeness? Is this meaning simply copying a photo perfectly is all you had to do… or is it some kind of higher thinking that creates an artist.

Likenesses depend on capturing the facial traits that we associate with the subject, especially eyes, lips, nose, and hairstyle. For example caricatures of famous persons show that we do not need to reproduce photographically a face to have it recognized. The artist has to pick out what we recognize about a face and how to bring that out.
I tend to study my subjects in terms of how their features interact with light (for example big noses or sunken eyes will give different occlusions of the light on their face than people with less prominent features.) I then sculpt in a way that may exaggerate the features I find unique to the individual and then gradually make the effect more subtle as refine the sculpture.

im actually not the crappest artist in the world, ive got a few good pictures and sculpts… but i CANNOT get likeness, ive tried and tried…
Guys like you amaze me, I think getting likeness is the hardest thing to do in art, everything else is lesser… ive learnt its easier and you get better results from not looking at a single reference, but of course you can look at references as you work but as if your art project is going to look exactly the same as it.
I guess ill keep going, if i ever get it ill be suprised and proud of myself.
