can't get fibers material to the s1 channel?

hey there
i heard that the only way to make fibers like hair on a full 3d model is to put it in the s1 channel while having your filled color in the s2

no matter what i do i cant get it in the s1! what should i do?

thanks

The Fibers material is already a 2 channel material, with the fibers modifiers in S1. If you have a single-channel material that you’re using for the non-fibers area, simply select that material and then click the CopySH button. Now select your Fibers material and select its S2 channel before pressing PasteSH.

If your current material has 2 or 3 shader channels, then you need to get more creative. In this case, select a material with one more channel than your current mat has. For example, if you’re using a 2-channel material, you’ll need a tri-shader. Now with your original material, select S1 and press CopySH. Then go to the tri-shader (or quad-shader if needed) and select the S2 channel. Press PasteSH. Back to the original material, select the S2 channel and copy. Back to the multi-shader, select S3 and paste. Now go to the Fibers material, select the S1 channel and copy it. Back to the multi-shader, select the S1 channel and paste.

The result will be a material where the Fibers are in S1 and the channels from your other material are in the remaining channels. They’re in the same order as before, but have been offset by one shader slot thanks to the presense of the fibers in S1.

Remember: You have to actually open the Material>Modifiers sub-palette to be able to see the individual shader channels.

Attached is a fibers version of the SphericalBlend material so you can see how it’s done.
