Cannot paint textures into shadowbox

alright so I wanted to try using shadowbox to make a simple base mesh rather than 3ds max or maya (the way I used to do it) and i cannot paint onto shadowbox. I morph the shadowbox UV’s, place the textures over the correct area’s, turn off spotlight and than for the life of me cannot get paint to show up on shadowbox. Its not a simple error such as leaving RGB turned off or the RGB intensity too low, it just literally wont paint onto shadowbox. I can pain on all of my models, i can paint on anything else but for some reason paint will now show up onto shadowbox so i cant paint my textures on and than sculpt my base mesh. Ive been at this problem for 2 hours now and I’m ready to start punching brick walls because I cant for the life of me figure out why shadowbox and shadowbox alone wont let me put paint on it (and yet in many tutorials ive watched people paint without a problem)

save me, this looks like a nice way to make a base mesh and yet in the time its taken to try to put down some texture into shadowbox i could have created the whole basemesh in 3ds max.

You can paint with mask there, not textures!

yes, but id like to paint a texture on the back to use as a blueprint, and ive seen this done in many tutoriials such as this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3I7Epmbd0Q but I am unable to ust paint on shadowbox at all
