Can you paint directly to texture?

In ZB4 can you paint to textures?
I know you can polypaint, and bake polypaint to texture.
But can you paint to texture directly?

you mean paint on the 2D flats?

yes.

texture>import file
texture>select image
texture>crop and Fill

paint away.
(use layers)

save image, reapply to mesh.

Sorry I didnt explain myself clearly.
If I have a low res 3d model that has UV coordinates and a texture applied to it, can I paint directly on the model and have it apply to the texture in Zbrush without using polypaint?
I cant use polypaint because the resolution of the verts is not high enough. I know I can subdivide the model and paint that way but thats not what Im asking.

yeah, paint in 2D on the flats.

texture>crop and fill

I guess what you’re asking is can you paint in 3D on directly to a texture? The answer is no.

No, that is not possible. You should divide the model to get the vertices you need and do polypaint, which you can then convert back to texture when you’re done. If you’re concerned about model smoothing you can turn off Tool>Geometry>Smt before you divide. That will keep the exact polygon shapes while still giving you the higher resolution for painting.

Thanks.
This technique is perfectly fine for meshes with a uniform distribution of verts but when texturing inorganic models such as houses and buildings its difficult to get enough polygon resolution on flat walls due to their comparatively low polycount compared to other parts of the mesh.
I’ve been getting around this by breaking off sections of my model and importing them into zbrush.

It’s a pity Zbrush cant paint to textures, I love all the projection texturing techniques.
