Can you make a displacement map with 2 external meshes 1 morphed 1 not

Hi:

Got a question, can you make a displacement map in zbrush, with 2 external meshes with same vertex count, 1 mesh unmorphed (base), and 1 morphed (shape altered). I’m working in poser 7, and am trying to do the following:

1: Load David 3 into poser.
2: Apply a morph to David 3 (For example muscular).
3: Export the morphed obj file.
4: Load both the unmorphed David 3 obj file (base), and the morphed obj file into zbrush, and create a displacement map.
5: Export the displacement map.
6: Load David 3 into poser, and apply the exported displacement map to him.

So you’re trying to use displacement maps to accomplish what the morph would do?

Yes, this is possible. Just a bit tricky. In ZBrush you would do the following:

  1. Import the morphed mesh and divide it a few times.
  2. Import the unmorphed mesh and append it to the first as a SubTool.

  3. Store a morph target, then divide it to match the first one.
  4. Press Tool>SubTool>Project All to transfer the shape from the morphed version.
  5. Go to level 1, switch to the stored morph target, then create your displacement map.

Yep. Thanks for the info.

Hi Aurick:

Can’t seem to get this to work, I was wondering if you could post screen shots of how to do what you posted. I’m having trouble with step 2, importing the unmorphed obj, and apending as sub tool. I think it’s lack of sleep. I’m doing 12 days at work, gearing up for xmas season.

Easy: First press Tool>Import and load the new version of the model. Then select your original version and press Tool>SubTool>Append. Select the new version from the pop-up window that will appear, and it will be appended.

See my signature for more information about working with SubTools.

Thanks for the explanation. I took the day off for some much needed sleep.
Now I should be able to get this to work. I’ll be so glad when the holiday season is over.
