Can I render Shadows to Polypaint/Texture?

Hi All,
Is it possible to make a BPR render in Zbrush with all the goodies like AO and Shadows, and then have that shadow information transferred down to the polypaint information so I can make a texture out of it?
Kind of like Render to texture in 3d Studio.
If there is a tutorial that you know of - EVEN BETTER
Im pretty experienced w/ ZBrush just not the rendering part of it.
thanks for any help with this.
best

Yes and no. You can export the rendered document as a PSD file, then immediately project it back onto the mesh using ZApplink which would give you everything bake into the texture. But this wont work well at all for the shadows because zbrush doesn’t physically place lights around a virtual scene like you’d see in a program like Blender. Instead it uses the normals of the surface (which is why you drag lights around a sphere in the light palette in order to control them). This basically means the lights come from the same direction on your screen regardless of how you view your model, which is going to cause visual conflicts when you need to bake multiple views.

AO would be fine as it’s generally based on the geometry and wouldn’t change around as you rotate the mesh. Though if you already have a diffuse texture, you might have more control if you bake an AO map separately (zbrush’s multi-map exporter plugin gives you this option, or you can export and bake in another program).

Thanks Cryrid
that is very informative
I guess I’ll just have to do it in Max.
