Can I create a mask from a layer?

I’m trying to isolate the raised areas on an armor piece I’m working on, and it seems like masking those parts would be the best way to go about it. Each of my subtools have multiple layers for ease of detailing. I’d rather not have to go back in and repaint the mask over the areas I want masked, but if there’s no other way…

My goal after doing this would be to colorize individual sections for my diffuse map, and if someone knows of a better way to go about doing this I’m definitely open to suggestion - still very much a beginner to using Zbrush!

Here's what I'm working with, for reference:

Turn off the other layers.

Turn on Brush>Cavity Mask.

Set Brush>CavityMaskIntensity to -100

Now use a large brush, hold Ctrl, and paint over the surface. It helps to use a negative Focal Shift and start your stroke on a raised area.

This isn’t perfect, but with some experimentation it should help you out a lot.

thats a cool trick, aurick! I was looking for something like this, too. It gives a slightly different result than I expected, but it helps

thanks!

edit: playing with the cavity-curve gives me almost exactly what I wanted! Hooray
