Can I adjust the distance between brushes when using Radial Symmetry?

Yes, by changing the brush size. Depending on what you are doing you may find turning off Dynamic for the brush size helps.

If that doesn’t help, please show a picture of what you are trying to achieve.

I’ve had another look and it seems RS is wrong tool for the job. I was expecting a radial pattern of brushes that would remain constant but, as the proximity between the brushes is governed by the distance between the cursor and the object’s origin, the more I move my pen the farther apart the cursors radiate.

I was trying to generate a fine mist of spraypaint but with a brush size large enough that I could cover an object quickly. (The tutorial I was following told me to click the radial button which I’m guessing is now defunct) Now that I look at it again it seems I should be painting with a freehand stroke and a custom alpha, or maybe Alpha 23 with an increased Alpha Tile value. I’ll get there…

Thanks for the reply!

If the brush size remains constant a radial pattern will always get farther apart the further you go from the origin.

There’s radial symmetry in the Transform palette, the ® button, presumably what you have been using. (The other radial option is a stroke and is only available if you are using a 2.5D tool or drawing with Edit mode off. You can select it by clicking on the large Current Stroke thumbnail in the Stroke palette or on the left of the interface.)

Radial symmetry should work OK. You could experiment with different alphas, larger brush sizes and changing the Focal Shift and RGB Intensity settings.

Alternatively you might consider using NoiseMaker (the Tool>Surface menu).
