Brush depth, alpha orientation

I have a couple of dumb beginner questions:

  1. When sculpting on a thin object, the brush ‘punches through’ and affects the opposite side. How can I stop that?

  2. When using Drag Dot to position an alpha, it rotates as I drag. How can I force it to a certain orientation?

Turn on BACKFACE MASKING in the Brush Palette controls to avoid effecting the other side. One caution though. Be careful not to go too deep and intersect your geometry.

As far as the drag stroke is concerned. You are setting a radius when you click and drag. So if you randomly start in one place and drag far to another, you are actually creating a circle where the first click is the center and your stroke travels around as you rotate. Try this with an arrow alpha for see for yourself with a long drag distance and a very short drag distance.

If you need tight control click right on the midpoint of where you want your impression and rotate from there in a tight circle of influence.

One trick you can use with DragDot is to turn on Backtrack, SnapToTrack and Line in the Stroke palette. Draw a line directly through the point where you want your alpha to be and then drag back (and forth) to position exactly.

Thank you Nancyan and Marcus. Works!

Marcus always comes thru with the best-est answer! Yaaay Marcus!!

Add holding shift while following Marcus’ tip and you really get some control!!
