Brush custom hotkeys not working

Hi everyone!

Unfortunatelly, when you have a problem in the communication between the products of two separate companies, you don’t know which one to ask:

My problem is that -for some reason- the custom hotkeys I’ve assigned to my brushes (all of them of the format “alt + letter” ) stop working from time to time for no apparent reason. I use a razer tartarus (which uses synapse 2) So I don’t know if it is a zbrush thing or a tartarus thing.

I tried reastarting zbrush without success. Once it happens, they only start working again if I restart my system (windows 10 btw)

(although I think its zbrush because the hotkeys that are not for brushes seem to work fine)
any suggestions?
thank you!

Hello @Aris

Brushes are sort of a special case when it comes to hotkey assignment. The main modifier keys Shift, Ctrl, and Alt all have hard-coded functions related to Brush behavior, and may conflict with or break hotkey assignment. Alt is the safest to use with brushes and some quick tests here indicate no problems using it, but it would be my guess you have a problematic combination somewhere that breaks your hotkeys when you attempt to use it.

With brushes, I recommend following the documentation for Brush hotkey assignment and select them with the customizable letter combos from the Pop-up, or creating a custom pop up panel with a limited situational selection of brushes, and assigning the hotkeys to that panel rather than the brush.

This I have no explanation for. Understand that the above is only a guess based on general experience. This might indicate some sort of hardware conflict. If you’d like to work through an issue in a more technical fashion, you would need to contact Pixologic Support and start a conversation there. You would need to provide them with more specific information about your installation and usage.

Good luck! :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello, thanks for the answer!

As I’ve found out, tartarus is not to blame. Even when I press the hotkeys from the keyboard they don’t work.
The strange thing is that when I hover over the brush icon, it shows the assigned shortcut but it just doesn’t work!!!

As I understood from the zbrush manual, you assign the shortcuts, press ‘store’ and they are supposed to work. Unfortunatelly, I’ve seen many posts about this specific problem but few solutions (at least they didn’t work for me).

It is really a problem for me because I’m quite used to using shortcuts for everything.

please, anybody else with the same problem???

Hi, I am just putting the answer here for anyone that has the same problem:

It’s the language… Zbrush shorcuts only work with English.
It took me long to realize it because I’ve never had this problem with other applications (sketchup for example would perceive ‘alt+s’ exactly the same way as ‘alt+σ’ (s in Greek)

maybe it’s a small bug that could be fixed?
