Brush alpha grey at surface level

Hi all,
I hope this is not a basic question, I’ve searched but couldn’t find an answer:

Normally, when you add an alpha mask to a brush, when you apply it on a surface, the black pixels add nothing and the white pixels add the maximum (or subtract, if you press alt)

Is there a way to make the black pixels subtract and white pixels add so that you can add details to a surface without adding thickness to it? (offset the zero from black to 50% grey)

I am applying skin details to a human hand and I noticed that by the time the details where intense enough, the hand had become slightly -but noticeably- thicker.

I hope I made my question clear.

Hello @Aris

If I understand you correctly, the Alpha> MidValue slider will establish the median threshold for displacement with an alpha. If you increase the value to the max, the black areas should “push in” more, leaving the white area as zero displacement.

There are also a number of features that will allow you to to set a max value for the displacement. Thickskin and Lazy Mouse 2.0 can be used this way.

Good luck! :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, that was exactly what I had in mind. I couldn’t even explain it as well as you.
That gave me a solution. Thank you!!!
