"Bronze" Award

A “Bronze” 3D digital sculpture I created in 2018 as a Lifetime Achievement Award to Thomas Sorovetz by AMUG (Additive Manufacturing Users Group) for 25 years of service to 3D printing technologies.
I was hired in late February by a 3D Print company to create a digital sculpture that their team would print and then “finish” or paint to appear as a real metal bronze award. We discussed what the award would look like and I was given references of foundry workers and images of a modern foundry plant. Since Thomas had a background in real foundry work, we thought it would be cool to make the sculpture of him as an old style foundry worker, pouring molten metal from a large casting ladle. The style of the figure would appear as if it was sculpted in clay with a rough "sculpt tool” surface and then to make it all artsy, that smooth molten metal on the bottom would pool up underneath him and form right back into his legs.
This was a rush job on my end because we began the project on February 27. The awards banquet was set for April 10 and the final award had to be done before that date so that left me a short time to complete my design and get the 3D files over to them to complete the rest. I was sent reference images and we discussed concepts on that Feb day and at night I did what basically became the final design in just one sitting. By March 8 with a few changes to the base, all was done on my end, then it was printed and they final finish treatment.

The grayscale images are my final 3D sculpt before adding color.

This next set are images my final 3D sculpt in a proposed “bronze” painted finish.

The 3rd set shows the 3D printed sculpt and then the real world finished award.
