Hey guys,
First of all, thank you VERY much for all the great comments, your kind words and the warm welcome, that really means a lot to me! I didn’t expect such a great response - on the one hand because of my pretty long “absence” and on the other hand because of the quality of my work. Compared to today standard I consider my stuff as pretty mean.
ljabli - thank you man
Zber2 - thank you very much
julien3d - thx for your comment! I think arms maybe just look a bit short. That comes from their slightly angled position I think. Fingers, wrist and elbow are bend just a tad and that makes them shorter looking as they actually are from certain views. But I know, usually what looks wrong is wrong!
rulonis - thanks! Wood is a fantastic material to work with; not only for traditional wood carving but also for milling.
Piggyson - thank you very much Joseph! Your fibermesh work looks stunning; I consider buying a copy of your DigitalTutors tutorial. I have no experience with fibermesh yet
sasquatchpoacher - thank you very much Gregory! I love your last piece; great render! Also the pirate print turned out fantastic
tez - thank you Danny
nickZ - thank you very much Nick. For more information about the wood bust milling, see below
pabgo - thx man
Yeenke - thank you very much!
rattus - thank you!
AdamRodger - thanks!
Derek Frenzo - thank you very much! As already mentioned, the green portraits are all Mudbox screenshots. I made these sculptures already a few years ago. By that time no BPR render was available and so I brought them into Mudbox because of the realtime shadows there and the “smooth surface” feature. That’s not necessary anymore I’m sure you could reproduce the look by using one of Adam Lewis Matcap materials. I think they look pretty similar to the standard Mudbox material.
polaroid29 - thank you man. No, I’m not a hair stylist by any means Actually, making good looking hair is pretty tricky; especially when you must make"real" CG hair!
Lil’sister - thank you very much David, I’m a huge fan of your work. Keep rocking!
FabioPaiva - thanks Fabio! As you already know, I love your latest work. It feels very natural and vivid
Webhead - Thank you very much!

rasmusW- thank you! Man, you’re totally right about that! Snowboard season is really slowly kicking in and I already can hardly wait
Lepra - thx! For more information about wood carving please see below
3mm - thank you very much Mohammad! We have already talked
Santis - thanks for your comment!

Ok, here is some more information about the milling project:
I worked together with a local company called “3DWood” www.3dwood.com and http://www.facebook.com/3dwood/ (by local I always mean North Italy) They have all sorts of milling machines: a big Kuca robot with was used for this project and some huge 5 axis milling machines for mass production. There also work some very skilled wood carvers who create wooden statues the traditional way with hammer and carving knifes. I was commissioned to create the portrait of a local politician. Because of time reasons, we decided to do that digitally and not the usual way by modeling it first in clay, scan it and then milling it. Modeling it on a"2d" screen is always a little bit tricky. You can never be sure what you get at the end and it takes some time and testing to understand how the real object turns out. I did the sculpting work in ZBrush and prepared it for 3d printing. 3DWood did a 3d print in sandstone to check the proportions. After that they prepared it for milling inside their CAM software. The milling itself is a pretty straightforward process and doesn’t take long. At the end, once of their carvers smoothed and polished the surface. The final head is a little bit bigger than life size. I’m not sure about the costs - I will ask them. All in all, it was a very cool project!
Once again, thank you very much for the comments and your interest!
Cheers,
Selwy
Thats a really deserved top row. Amazing forms, even the heads, i can instantly recognize. And you think your stuff isnt great ? Man, you mastered zbrush, its hard to go anywhere when your stuff looks like this ;D
