Boy Meets Critter

Here’s a little piece ive been working on in my spare time. Its heavily inspired by a Norman Rockwell painting called “Springtime” (I found an old Rockwell book not to long ago, and Ive quickly become a huge NR fan).
The low Res meshes were done in Maya and the sculpting and texturing were done in Zbrush - Zapplink/Photoshop.

Let me know what ya think. C&C is very welcome.

Thanks,
Eric

My parents had a lot of Rockwell prints and plates arounf the house well I was growing up.

I wish he did some critters like this.

Love it:D

This Critters look a little Cat in the hat.

Keep going

Nice, special the boy looking at the critters. The scene looks a bit unfinished and empty but I like it.
:+1:

…about Norman Rockwell :grimacing:
Cool adaptation :+1:

Haha, nice! I love it. Norman meets Starwars, or is this for a ‘Say no to Drugs!’ Poster?

LittleDedder: Yeah, som Rockwell critters would have rocked. Yeah, Im defintely a big Seuss fan as well =)

Bas Mazur: I agree about the scene looking a bit unfinished, just not sure what the focus on now.

Frenchy Pilou: Great site, thanks!

lemonnado: Hehe, thanks

Heres a shot of the main Rockwell pic I was working form.
I mostly wanted to nail the pose and overall feel of the painting.

here’s my 2 cents (okay 3 cents):

move the circle up a bit like the original. The space at the top of the pic now is a bit odd.

shed some more light on the critters and the foreground - maybe add some more fur, grass, and rock-type stuff.

I think the most “finished” part is the boy’s face. I say polish the whole image to that level.

Muy bonito. Me encanta tu ilustración, sparty.:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Really nice piece. :+1: Personally I quite like the idea of the larger moon as it helps to link the two subjects together. I agree with Bas - less is more.

sneiwmada: Thanks for the crit!

saltapiedras: Glad ya like it =)

TrapDoor: Thanks

Really great picture. Always like critters.
Just the circle “resting” on his head, moved up would be “much gooder”
Good job!

Totally captures Rockwell’s spirit! That’s no mean feat. The character design is fun too.

5 Stars

Absolutely wonderful! Great interpretation! It’s so wonderful too see all this non-death/monster stuff appearing.

Great idea for an imaginative approach to studying the work of a master (so much better than just a straight copy)! I did notice your model is not resting his forearms above his knees, (like Rockwell’s). I can’t see how he’s holding the books under his arm and maintaining his balance. Also, his torso his longer, making him appear older. What’s the “storyline” of your illustration (what is the boy thinking?). Yours seems more confrontational than Rockwell’s. Great start!

Heres a shot of the wireframes.
Also, Mike, good eye!
I actually have the arms resting on the knee (Ive added a shot from a different angle, but I definitely didn’t do a good enough job selling it).
