Boris/Franzetta Style Scene

I am new to Zbrush so the basic rough shape was done in 3ds Max with the rest of the work to be done in Zbrush (with many help me questions I am sure)

I am a big Fan of Boris Vallejo and Frank Franzetta, so I decided to do a scene in their style. I wanted something a little unusual but which would slide right into their style as if one of them would have drawn it.

I still have the Detailing part to figure out in my mind, but the premise of this scene is a pair of Rhinotaurs (Male and Female) with either a pair of Amazonian females on their back with the usual Boris filigree style armour. Or posibly a female and male warrior female on the male rhinotaur back male on the females. in Barbarian style garb like furry loincloth and furry bra and panty type thing.

For the rhinotaurs they were done in 3DS Max using the Zbrush rhino for a base. I now will take it into zbrush for detailing. I thought about putting a rhino horn coming out of the rhintaurs forheads but that would look too cheesy and I doubt Frank or Boris would have done that.

I am willing to face the firing squad on this one as I want it to be a very good composition. Please feel free to comment on possibilities for scene setups too as I am thinking having them standing on top of a cliff edge looking out over the plains, but not much else on posing etc figured out yet.

this is only my second week 3D modelling and I have no other art skills so am still learning.

Note: I tried various scales of the human portion on this model and the result below is the final result which I feel looked least out of proportion. from the side it looks good, from the front the tporso looks too long. Remembering this is just the initial rough model I am thinking adding a few rolls of skin in the front to break up the transition. Overall I am pleased with the rough layout.

Here is a couple More views. I am still working on the female version right now getting ready to bring into zbrush.

one question I have is do I have to bring them both in as 1 obj file or is there a way as i progress can add more objects to my scene in zbrush?

Hey dude! i’m a big fan of those artists myself, would be nice to see this get developed. I like where its going already!

Might be useful to do some research on the characters your making first though, to get a better understanding of proportions maybe?

good luck dude!

chocolate I have several books of their artwork. to my knowledge there hasnt been a “Rhinotaur” done before. I do have a ref scene to go by. gimme a few ill find it and post it. It is of a centaur and female but the general idea is the same.

heres the boris pic i am loosely basing it on

ok got the female done time to work with zbrush. but i really wished i could bone them lol i wanna start posing them so bad lol

If anyone wants to take me under their wing and help me I have never boned a figure and have tried in zbrush and really screwed it up. also how to you import more than 1 object into zbrush so I can work on it as a schene?

thanks

AH AWESOME! one of my favs of boris, should be very interesting to get the hair details in. are you gona use shaders for it? also are you gona have a character on its back?

i was particularly interested in your post because i’ve half finished something i’ve based on a piece of frazetta’s -

hope you like!

nice one choco

I have over 1000 boris and franzetta pics. there are a few good books out there with all their artwork so you need anything just ask.

I am changing my human torsos as they are a little too wimpy I think I am going to go for a HULK style human torso to match the mass of a rhino and will look more natural.

as far as shaders etc huh? lol I have only been into this for 2 weeks now so not up on a lot of stuff yet. I am trying (without success) to figure out how to add bones to them so I can pose them so its easier to model and see what my final is looking like.

I am using 3ds Max and Zbrush for this compo.

yes I will have riders but until I can figure out how to bone things in order to be able to pose them thats on hold. especially until I get these Rhinotaurs base modeled to where I feel they look realistic. I have a ton of good high res rhino textures so whenever I figure out how to texture I can use them.

I see you using the wax I like the old bone metcap for mine really looks great even in rough draft mode and the way the lights hit it allows me to see stuff easier.

Ok here we go the new revamped Rhinotaur. lol good thing I didnt go with my first idea of using an elephant and making a giant Elephantaur. just trying to get the proportions right on this thing is killer. but rhinos have small heads compared to their body so I think the size will work.

I added the female warrior that will be riding him. I like the scale size difference as it makes the rhinotaur look larger than what a normal rhino would be. any opinions on the scale factor?

Ok I finished the Female and also have the male warrior ready. I tried various things with the females waist from wider to where it is at now. Wide just didnt seemd to work for her.

Now here is my thinking for the female Rhinotaur why I feel I have her proportions correct.
First females are usually slightly smaller in frame than males thus her human torso slightly slimmer which makes her a little narrower than the body but hey she cant help it shes female.
Next I gave her some decent size boobs and added sag to them. Shes a fat Rhino so naturally her boobs be bigger than normal and kinda fatty.
I didnt want her to have the usual female body builder style thats almost flat as boris and frank usually have some busty women and this keeps in the theme.
I did work a little on her in zbrush and brought her lower abs down some and a little longer and I thinkher torso came out really well. Next I will work on the blending of the 2 bodys.
The male I will be doing similar with the lower abs which willhelp narrow down the lengthyness of the torso.

Other than that I am happy with the results for my base models. thinking of the muscular (but fat) body of the rhino I decided to go with a more Hulk look and think I nailed it.

And Finally a couple shots of my full cast of characters for this scene.

well I also thunk of some more for the scene.

The Rhinotaurs will have ponytails with gold bands holding them up. will have to work on the females so she dont look just bald. the female warrior will have flaming red hair down to her butt with some curls to it. the male warrior will have long kinky hair just little past the shoulders. this is all after I learn how to do hair etc lol.

Well I finished the blend for the female and I really like the way it turned out.

For reference I am using the Shinyoldskull metcap http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=46175&page=2&pp=15

found above link. I really like modeling with it as you can see thelow spots get a nice shading and it allows you to see all kinds of problems when they pop up.

That is quite possibly one of the worst BV paintings I have ever seen.

lol yea this ones a little better but was just showing the theme type I was trying to do a centaur type creature with weapon and warrior woman on his back.

I been working on the male, however I dont care for him all that well mainly due to sharp point areas from my crappy meshing that I cant get to cover up or smooth down. However since this is only my first model I wont worry too much about it I just want to learn how to use the programs and tools. I am finally starting to get the hang of zbrush and got the male semi refined. its far from perfect but good for a start.

uh…before trying to emulate the styles of a master of art like ?Frazetta Id highly suggest you go through all of the tutorials on this site.
Right now it looks very bad.
You seemed to want honesty so Im being honest not rude.

To me this looks like a quickly modeled male torso slapped onto the default rhino model that comes with zbrush.

To me this isnt art and I feel if you’re going to copy masters styles you need much more studying.

I Do like the womans face…however the arms and body look like a male. Id suggest getting some anatomy books and learing to draw a bit first. You can’t really fake this stuff no matter how good the software.
Maybe think about making them from a simple z sphere mesh and slowly building form.

The porportions are all off because you’re basically puttin g a huge male body on a little rino body.

In reality this would never work since the animal is mjuch larger then a person.

Id suggest making the upper torso have way more rino elements in it to tie this togeather.
