Ok, my first post here, so bear with me…
Since the 3.5 update, I started messing with Zbrush again.
Was never really great with it, but have been going through the tut’s now, and I am learning more.
I came across something today that has me quite perplexed, I deformed one simple mesh with another similar to a boolean subtraction.
I’ve tried to reproduce my results, since Zbrush crashed shortly after, but I can’t do it again. Well, I can get Zbrush to crash again, but not the result I want.
Basically I took a sphere, stretched a simple beak shape onto it, copied that object and positioned the two so that the sphere portion was under the beak area.
I am almost postive it was the Merge Visible in Subtools with Weld active. Both screen objects took on the curved geometry under the “beak”, and were not joined. I should have taken a screen shot or something, but I went on to try to put spheres for eyes into the object and while trying to mirror the second eye Zbrush crashed.
I have not been able to do this again. I had been fiddling around for a while before I stumbled upon this, and had been using zspheres and other doodads. This wasn’t a fresh document.
I am reading that there arent Booleans in Zbrush, so what exactly did I do???
ZBrush really doesn’t have booleans per se. I would look a little more into the “Mesh Extract” (Subtool subtab) function and “Create Mesh Diff” (Morph Target subtab) to see about different ways extracting pieces of geometry.
Del Hidden (Geometry) is also a good way of cuttaway unneeded geometry, but in general Mesh extraction is a better choice as it will give you a true 3D object (with two sides and a rim) versus leaving you with a one-sided shell.

Thanks, I’m going through all the tuts I can find. They’re very helpful.
I’m really liking Zbrush for modeling and texturing. The interface and process is a bit different from what I’m accustomed to, but using a tablet is very nice.
I haven’t been able to reproduce the “boolean” result. I’ve since DL’d 3.52. I’m curious if Booleans will be included in v4?
