Bonobo Study

The forgotten ape… anyways this is still very much a WIP. A study, and an attempt to push the level of detail I put into my models. I have some great reference that I’m hoping to do justice. The plan is to take the model to about a million polys and add in all the wrinkle, pore and hair detail. Its currently at 88k polys, from a 1394 poly base cage.

I’ve only spent a few hours on this so far, so im not so much impressed with the quality of the model as I am with the speed at which zbrush allows you to work. Cheers Ken

Great Work as always Ken! I love where this one is going please keep posting WIP on it.

Nice monkey magic. :+1:

Will you add the hair detail with Zbrush ?

That is really beautifull already. It would be interesting to see a seires of them as they all have such different faces. I have read that the biggest ever survey of Bonobos was conducted last year and not a single one was found!! It may be that they have all died out or that they are hiding because of the war that is going on there. Desperate people are eating bushmeat to survive.

Anyway, I just thought I would throw taht in

Thanks Mr Noo, you have some great artwork on your site. I’d love to see more sketches, i can tell by just the one you have very good control with a pencil.

Ya the Bonobo’s are cool, the first animal ive really noticed all having such individual facial features.

It’s not easy to do the hairs with zbrush ( I think because I don’t have a great experience ).
So good luck. :ex:

Thats awesome, very detailed.

I’m also trying to make a monkey model aswell but this by far the best monkey model i’ve seen!

Your work is one of the best I have ever seen so far  , but what makes it so powerful is the lighting technique you’re using.

Plz: for the benefit to the forum riders, could you make a small snap shot or time laps tutorial showing your marvelous way of lighting.

Truly yours

Thanks spaz8, I will have to put more sketches up there. By the way, I tried your website but it couldn’t be found.

Thanks for all your comments. I’ll try and update the thread with more progess soon. I’ve been under the weather all week and have some other distractions at the moment.

I’m not sure why you were unable to get to my website. I clicked the link in my signature this morning and had no problems.

The hair I’m not sure how I’m gonna tackle, I’ve been meaning to carve hair in zbrush for a bit. I need to do that on the female model i posted last. I may try the fiber brushes in zbrush, or use sasquatch, a lightwave plugin im farmiliar with. But i think i will most likely attempt to carve the hair into the geometry and keep treating this study as one solid lump of clay.

BTW Eiad theres nothing special about my lighting, just a single spot light and a skin material ive just slightly tweaked from the Sok ones. All i try to do when I’m lighting a model like this is play till it has as much depth as i can get without hiding details and dents in the geometry.

BTW I hope the model really starts to come alive and feel more real as I start to tweak and add asymetrical details. He’s very much symetrical at the moment which sucks the soul out of him.

Here’s a bigger shot of the last image in the sequence above. Ken

I think you should remodel the ears. They are not bonobo like.

:+1: love the facial detailing!!! good work

I’ve spent perhaps 8 or 9 hrs now on the model. Its hard to tell cuz ive been pickin away it. Currently its at 356K polys, hopefully 1 more divide will give me the rez i need for the pore and sharper wrinkle detail. Th ears I want to atleast smooth out more. Im not sure if i’m gonna redo the ears, as someone said. The ears are very much like the reference drawing i used, but looking through my reference I do see there are lots of bonobos with different ear shapes than what i’ve done. The bonobos have very individual features from one to another. An ofcouse the hair! Thank you everyone for your interest! -Ken

Hi Ken,
Great job! looking forward to the next step. And ya, apes are just as individual as we are. I’m sure my ears are a different shape than yours. Also I’m glad to see that you understand the value in asymmetry. Keep going

really great skulpt !!!

congrats :sunglasses: :+1:

Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope i have something new to post very soon. I’m makin’ a list of things to fix, and add right now.

One thing I have been meaning to say about Zbrush for awhile now though is I can’t think of any other app where every minute you spend in it shows up as an improvement in what your doing. You can spend a day in maya or after effects whatever, and nobody but you, and maybe not even you can see a difference to what you started the day with.

I mean obviously time equals results, but zbrush takes this to a factor of 10! Can’t wait for 2.5 ,my rant. -Ken

I just keep finding/learning new things in zbrush. This great program just keeps getting better and better the more u dig and play.

Hair and texture to come.
