OK I have a little issue. I was wondering if you guys could help. I am working on a model. The base mesh was contructed in maya as one mesh. And brought into zbrush(this model has no UVs BTW. Now the thing is I poly grouped diff parts of the model and started to sculpt. I wasnt really thinking about it sub divisions. NOw the entire model is about 4 mil. I have ram enough to sub divide maybe once or twice but I think my machine will start to cry at about 13mil. I know I need more than that. Now I have no problems creating subtools. But my issue is how would I go about putting that detail from the subtools onto a single mesh. Mind you this is 1 body(half spider half woman) so its kinda large hence the big polycount. I really want this to be one mesh. But I dont see how I can have the subtools project detail onto one mesh. The clothing subtools are different But again I just want the final figure to be the original mesh with the details added. So what Im asking is subtool body details to one mesh. Any help would be great. THanks!!!
What is your ultimate use of the model going to be?
If you’re going to be rendering in Maya, then UV the model in Maya and apply those UV’s to level 1 of your model before you split it up. My recommendation is to use multiple UV regions so that you can get the most out of your detailing.
In ZBrush, go to level 1 and import the UV’d version. Use Tool>Polygroups>UV Groups followed by Tool>SubTool>GrpSplit. Your model will now be in separate pieces for each UV map. You can then create mutliple displacement maps to apply to your original model in Maya.
Actually the model is for a demo reel. What I did was basically made a quick basemesh in maya. Then I reshaped it into the form I wanted in Z. Did some retopoplogy in Z and exported the OBJ back to maya for more refinement. Now back in Zbrush sculpting but I didnt do the UVs. Your answer saved me alot of peace and mind. I am not new to modeling but not use to zbrush in any sort of pipeline. I use to use z as a standalone thing. Thanks for the help I will post progress and final results. wish me luck!!!
