blurry normal map in maya 2010

hi!

i´m an real zbrush-newbie and i got a question…

i got an ztool (head) with high details (pores wrinkles etc.) in sdiv:7.
all this looks real great in zbrush (details are awesome and clear).

to export this into maya 2010 i created an uv-map and an normal map
in size 8192 to bring all the details into maya 2010.

generelly the normal map is shown in maya (i brought the filter-type to:off)…
but the normal map looks real blurry and all the fine details (like pores etc.)
are gone :-/

can anybody give me an advice, what i´m doing wrong in my workflow,
or ist there an solution, to tweak the normal map, so that i can bring all the fine details
into maya 2010 (64bit)?

thanks a lot for an answer!

i wish all forum members an very nice weekend!

how many vert are in your subD level 7?

an 8k image is made to support 67million polygons. If you don’t have that many polygons…think of each vert as a pixel in a map. If you’re looking at a 4k image and you blow it up to 8k you get a blurry result, the same holds true if you try to push fewer details from a mesh to an image too large.

my guess is that is your problem. but without images or any maps, or screen grabs it’s hard to guess a visual problem from words.

hi beta_channel !

thank you very much for your reply,
all that is completely logical!

here is my my workflow:

i want to use an high res normal map (8k) on an low ploy mesh in maya.

  • i got an low poly mesh in maya
  • bring it into zbrush
  • go to sdiv level 7
  • finetune the mesh
  • make an normal map
  • go back to maya
  • smooth mesh and apply the normal map to the mesh.

do i think in the right direction when i say, that it should it be better for an sharper result,
to bring up the sdiv level to maximum and make the normal map at last?

thanks for an reply again!

have a nice day!
