Best way to get this texture applied to my model

Do you see the square texture in the attached image. I am trying to think of the best way to do this and can’t figure it out. I was thinking a mask, but that seems too complex. I was then thinking some sort a stitch brush, but changing the alpha. I am sure this is easy to do. Does someone have some ideas for me?

I’d unwrap the cylindrical portion of the hat, and then apply the alpha either as a mask (uv morph+ projection master), or through Noise Maker.
