Best way to get fabric patterns?

I’m trying to get a fine fabric pattern on my model but I’m having a few issues and have a few general questions.

I’ve tried to use HD geometry but I’ve only been able to work on small portions of the model at a time. Can I somehow apply a mask from an alpha over the whole HD mesh?
Doing it to small portions of the mesh at a time, inflating it and making everything fit and match without getting overlaps can take a long time, if it’s even possible.

My current workflow to create the details for cloths:

  1. First I subdivide the model as high as I can (I don’t use hd geom),
  2. Then I create a mask from a tileable cloth alpha (an example of one is attached to this post),
  3. Then I slightly inflate the model.

Are there better ways to do this?

I’m not quite happy with the results (see attachments) I know the UVS are a bit stretched in places and there are some “thicker lines” in the cloth alpha that are ugly but this was made for quick testing for this post, the attached cloth is cropped as well, the example here does not tile.

I’m not asking for a UV relaxation tutorial or how to create tileable alphas. I’m just wondering if there are better ways to use alphas to get a fabric pattern than I’m currently using.

Thanks.
