Well, you never want to set your compact mem higher than your total ram, which appears to be 1.99 gb that your system recognizes, and you also want to leave enough Ram there for the OS and any other apps open. So on XP, I think setting your Compact Mem to 1gb or a bit higher should be fine.
Beyond that though, on 32 bit OS, you probably want to stick with the settings Zbrush has given you.
