Batman Year One Statue Based on the work of David Mazzucchelli

So the concept here was to approximate the artist’s style for this particular comic in sculpture.

copyright 2009 DC Comics
Press release:
"Appearing in black and white, it’s the Caped Crusader as he is seen in one of the most influential Batman stories of all time, BATMAN: YEAR ONE!

This pose, designed by David Mazzucchelli, was used in one of the original promotional images for the book, and the artist himself was consulted for the production of this statue. The statue measures approximately 7.75” high x 4.5” wide x 2.75” deep, is painted in monochromatic tones, features a Bat-logo-shaped base and is packaged in a black and white box. The all-new Batman: Black and White statue will be available to own starting in September and will retail for $80!" We tilted the head up a little for DC although when you see the actual statue he's clearly looking down. We also did the head from the comic itself, not the early design with long ears. Sculpted in ZBrush, printed, cleaned up by Rene Aldrete, painted by Mike Pflaumer. Created at Gentle Giant Studios.

Beautiful sculpting, I love how it retains the animated/comic style perfectly. How did you go about making the cape?

i like the concept but the model itself looks like it was rushed. the head looks pretty bad imo. sorry dude im just bein honest. your previous works blows this completly out of the water.

Thanks for posting Jim.
Your work is always an inspiration for me!

Take care!

Raf

Pretty cool, looks like the comic image and faithful to Mazzucchelli’s style.

These are quite great Jim. I am always excited by the subtle attention you give to planes and breaks of the form. It is pretty easy to overlook such nuances but your work always shines because of it. You really have translated the graphic style and economy of line of the original illustration to the 3D sculpt!

Cheers!
Scott

Very nice, clean interpretation of the style.

I guess this will seem odd but I made the basic shape in Maya, and built topology to match the wrinkles with the split polygon tool and image planes. Not for animation, but proportionally all the wrinkles match the drawing though they wrap the form.

Cool Jim! That is more like the Batman that I grew up with . Well actually I never grew up, just got old.

I totally agree with monstermaker  … Great job Jim !
